Several years ago Alison Stammers, Chislehurst Matters Councillor candidate in this year’s local elections initiated the campaign for cctv on Chislehurst High Street following a spate of break ins and incidents.

Alison built the business case and presented it to London Borough of Bromley (LBB) got police support & liaised with LBB officers and with ward councillors who were required by LBB to support the application.

It’s a very long story but it took a lot of attempts over the years plus an article in the News Shopper, to convince the portfolio holder. There were lots of discussions about funding with LBB refusing to fund it and expecting local businesses to pay for cctv in the public realm. Local businesses of course have their own internal cctv they already pay for.

Alison is nothing if not persistent. She badgered Cllr Sharma, continued to get police support – our new police sergeant at the time was fantastic and really helped us get it over the line. She organised a public poll to get the support which was required by LBB. Eventually LBB not only agreed it but agreed to fund it and make it part of their own 24 hour system. It was finally installed last summer.

Whenever we become aware of an incident on the High Street we ask the police to liaise with LBB to review footage.

As recently as Tuesday the 12th April 2022 we  were alerted to lots of fly posting yesterday evening on Chislehurst High Street. We were down there first thing this morning removing those we could.

We reported those we couldn’t remove on FixMyStreet and have also been in contact with the Council who promise us Veolia will be down to remove the remainder asap.

We also asked LBB officers to see if they can identify the culprits of the recent flyposting which is taking LBB contractors ages to remove because of the strong adhesive used.
