According to analysis by BBC Verify, some local councils in England would need to increase new housing by at least five times in order to meet government targets.
The BBC’s data highlights the significant challenge the Government faces in meeting its “milestone” of building 1.5 million new homes in England over the next five years.
In total, 16 local authorities in England have new annual targets that are at least 400% higher than their recent housing delivery.
Bromley:
- In Bromley 3,001 new homes a year are required by Government targets set in 2024
- 229 homes were added per year on average in Bromley since 2021.

Some thoughts:
- Are these targets achievable?
- How can councils secure the necessary funding to meet these extraordinary targets?
- Will the government provide this funding, or will councils need to rely on private developers and partnerships?
- Where will the land come from for councils to build on?
- Will councils be allowed to build on Green Belts?
- Is there enough manpower and expertise available to manage and deliver their target?
- Has the government considered all the necessary infrastructure that comes with new housing, such as doctors’ surgeries, roads, schools, Policing, utilities, council services and recreation areas?
What do you think?
