Number Plate Theft:

Car number plate theft is a growing problem in many areas, including Chislehurst – as recently as last weekend.

Why Do People Steal Number Plates?

Number plates are often targeted by thieves because they can be easily removed and sold or used for illegal purposes.

With so much enforcement by CCTV or ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) stolen plates can be used to disguise another car to aid crimes like:

  1. Changing the identity of a stolen car so it can be sold
  2. Ram-raiding or burglary
  3. Driving from petrol stations without paying
  4. Evading congestion charges, parking and speeding fines

How Can You Secure Your Number Plates?

While number plate theft might seem difficult to prevent, there are a few measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of your plates being stolen:

  1. Use Anti-Theft Screws: One of the simplest and most effective ways to secure your plates is to use anti-theft screws or bolts. These screws are specially designed so that they can only be removed with a specific tool that most thieves do not have.
  2. Install a Locking Plate Frame: Locking frames around your number plates add an extra layer of protection. These frames are fixed in a way that makes it much harder for thieves to remove the plates quickly.
  3. Check Your Plates Regularly: Regularly check that your plates are still securely fastened and have not been tampered with. This can also alert you to any signs of attempted theft.
  4. Store Your Vehicle in a Secure Location: Whenever possible, park your car in a garage, secure parking lot, or well-lit area. Parking your vehicle in a public space with high foot traffic can deter thieves from attempting to steal your plates.
  5. Use a Number Plate Cover: While this won’t completely prevent theft, a cover or sticker that obscures the plate’s screws can act as a deterrent to thieves who might be looking for an easy target.

What to Do if Your Number Plates Are Stolen

If your number plates are stolen, it’s important to act quickly to prevent them from being used for criminal activities. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Report the Theft to the Police: Immediately report the theft of your number plates to the Police. This will help create a record of the incident and provide you with a reference number. The police can also alert other authorities or systems that might help in the recovery of your plates or the prevention of fraudulent use.
  2. Notify the DVLA: The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) should be notified if your number plates are stolen. They can help you issue a replacement plate and may flag the plate as stolen in their records.
  3. Inform Your Insurance Company: It’s important to inform your insurance provider of the theft, as your policy may require you to report it. Some insurers may also cover the cost of replacing the plates, depending on your coverage.
  4. Check for Unauthorized Activity: Keep an eye on any traffic tickets, fines, or notices that may come to your address, as your stolen plates could be used for speeding, parking violations, or toll evasion. Report any suspicious activity to the police.
  5. Replace Your Plates: After reporting the theft, there are a number of companies that will replace them for you. You’ll need to bring current proof of identity and proof of entitlement (V5) to prove the vehicle is yours.

While number plate theft can be extremely frustrating, understanding the reasons behind it and taking simple steps to secure your plates can help minimize your risk. If your plates are stolen, acting quickly to report the theft and take the necessary steps can help prevent further issues. By staying vigilant and taking proactive measures, you can help ensure your vehicle and identity remain secure.
